The day was hot and humid as I walked out of the Granville St skytrain station, I was sweating already. I had convinced my mom and begged my dad to let this happen, but I was starting to feel a little uneasy. My mom and I walked into a store baring bondage outfits and a wide variety of strap-ons and different sized whips on every wall. My heart beat excellerated. At the tender age of 12 this wasn’t the sort of thing that put my mind at ease.
“Go ahead tell the man what you’re here for,” my mom said to me. “Eyebrow piercing?” I said in a small voice to the man. He lead me into a small stark white room at the back of the shop decorated with many ‘obscene’ photos of spread eagle women and men with tattoos in places I never imagined. In the corner of the room there was a disfigured chair that looked like a device a crazy person would have been strapped into for electric shock treatment back in the 40’s. The next thing I knew I was sitting in this angry chair with a clamp on my eyebrow trying to control my breathing and focus on my heartbeat because it felt like my heart was ready to burst out of my chest. 7 years and about 30+ piercings later the roles have reversed. Since that first true experience of body piercing when I was only 12 years old, I have lived and breathed body modification. I took the Next! Body Piercing and Aftercare Certificate Training Course about 4 years ago now, and when I was offered the job here at Next! I took it as a sign that this is truly what I was meant to do, and not just a cool little side project. It is now my job to guide all of you first comers through an experience you’ll never forget, and to keep all of you addicts coming back for more!!
